The Finance Minister is urging the public not to panic about the health of the banking system.

Brian Lenihan says he has been assured by the Financial Regulator that Irish banks have adequate access to cash and that depositors’ funds are secure.

Minister Lenihan is also welcoming a move by the Regulator overnight to ban the short selling of shares in a number of Irish banks.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, he said it is important that people remain calm.

"The regulator has made clear that our banks have ready access to cash from the European Central Bank.

"What I would say to Irish savers is your deposits are secure and your Government will ensure the stability of our financial system," he said.
