Man charged with Cork manslaughter
Gardaí arrested a 36-year-old man today and charged him with the unlawful killing of a woman in Cork city last October.
Detective Garda David O’Callaghan charged Greg Holt who lives with the Simon Community in Cork with a count of manslaughter where it is alleged that he unlawfully killed Marion O'Leary at Albert Quay in Cork on October 17, 2007.
Holt made no reply to the charge after he was cautioned.
The deceased woman, Marion O'Leary (aged 54), from St Anthony's Road in Gurranabraher, Cork, had been living in hostels and other accommodation around the city for several years.
Her body was removed from the River Lee last October.
In Cork District Court today Inspector Pat Cadogan said the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial by indictment on the matter.
Det. Garda O’Callaghan said he arrested Holt at Blackrock Road, Cork, at 8.25am today and charged him with the manslaughter at 9am.
He said there was no objection to the accused being remanded on bail with the one condition that he signs on at Anglesea Street garda station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Judge Uinsin MacGruairc remanded Holt on bail to appear at Cork District Court again on October 15 for service of the book of evidence.
It is anticipated that the case will then be returned for trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
