Equality Authority wants to remain independent

The Equality Authority is calling on the Government to let it remain an independent agency.

The Equality Authority is calling on the Government to let it remain an independent agency.

It has said any proposed mergers between it and four other state bodies is unnecessary as it works effectively in its current form.

Under the plans from the Department of Finance, the Authority could be amalgamated with the Equality Tribunal, the National Disability Authority, the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Data Protection Commissioner.

But chairperson Angela Kerins has said people now need the agency more than ever - and that it can best meet their needs with its current structure.

"A lot of ordinary people, businesses, employers, trade unions and community groups are asking for more support from the Equality Authority.

"We believe the best way to do that is through its current form," she said.
