The body of Limerick man Gerard McDonnell will not be recovered from K2 after the rescue operation was wound down today.

The 37-year-old is among a group of climbers believed to have been killed on the world's second highest mountain in Pakistan.

The Irishman died on his descent after reaching the summit on Friday.

President Mary McAleese has led tributes to the Mr McDonnell.

Members of Mr McDonnell's family may fly to Islamabad in the coming days.
