Hanafin dismisses call for new property tax

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin has dismissed a recommendation to replace stamp duty on houses with a new property tax.

The National Economic and Social Council is suggesting that the once-off property levy be replaced with an ongoing tax which would be paid continuously.

However, asked about the matter in Dublin today, Minister Hanafin said it was not something the Government was considering.

She said it was a very sensitive topic and she did not envisage the Government supporting the move in the future.
