Motorists aid gardaí in bid to unravel Cork murder
Gardaí investigating the killing of a Corkman at his home at the weekend have been aided by motorists who spotted a man walking on the Cork to Kinsale road.
John Hyland, aged 69, died at his home at St Francis’ Avenue, off College Road, after he was stabbed a number of times with a knife.
It is believed the main suspect in the case is currently being treated at a psychiatric hospital in the city.
However, gardaí are looking to piece together a timeline of the events and are still keen to speak to members of the public who travelled between Riverstick and Belgooly between midnight on Friday and 9am on Saturday.
Gardaí are trying to trace the moves of a man in his mid-20s of thin build, who was walking on the Cork-Kinsale road during those hours.
Superintendent Barry McPolin, who is leading the enquiries, said: “The investigation is progressing well. We’ve had a good response from members of the public and a number of passing motorists. However, we would still like to speak to people who were in the area at that time.”
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau continued their examination of the Hyland home until yesterday afternoon.
The body of Mr Hyland, who was well-known in Cork business and sporting circles, was found by his wife on Saturday afternoon.
