Figures highlight low conviction rate for gun crimes
New figures from the Government have reportedly revealed that less than one-fifth of gun crimes result in a criminal conviction.
Reports this morning say more than 3,600 gun crimes were recorded in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The respective conviction rates for the three years were 17%, 18% and 15%.
The main reason for the low rates is reportedly that the identities of the perpetrators have never been established.
Witnesses in some cases where suspects have been identified have also been too frightened to give evidence against those responsible.
The figures relate to all gun-related crimes, including murders, shootings and armed robberies.
