Cowen defends cutbacks amid Dáil criticism

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has defended the cutbacks announced by the Government yesterday in response to the deterioration in the public finances.

The opposition was highly critical of the cutbacks as the Dáil began debating the economic downturn today.
