Judges urged to use powers on parental responsibility

The Minister for Children says he wants District Court judges to make use of legal powers which ensure that parents take responsibility for children involved in crime and vandalism.

The Labour Party claims that these legal powers have never been used in the seven years since they were introduced as part of the Children’s Act.

The sections of the legislation make parents accountable for their children's actions, including accepting financial responsibility.

Speaking in Dublin today, Minister Barry Andrews said the powers are controversial but are important tools when used proportionately.
