Change in tactics needed to help heroin addicts - Report

A major change in tactics is needed to help address the heroin problem in Ireland, according to an organisation that supports homeless drug addicts in Dublin.

A report this morning indicates the number of people seeking treatment for heroin addiction across the country is about to pass 10,000 for the first time.

Most of the addicts seeking methadone treatment are based in Dublin, but there has also been increase in demand in counties where heroin had previously not been a problem.

Tony Geoghegan from Merchant's Quay Ireland says the authorities now need to provide the resources to help addicts move beyond methadone treatment.
