Man arrested in Down pub killings probe

Police have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with a pub shooting 14 years ago.

Detectives investigating the Loughinisland loyalist pub killing in the North which left six men dead detained the man in Maidstone, Kent last night.

He was arrested in connection with the 1994 Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) atrocity in the bar frequented mainly by Roman Catholics.

Gunmen sprayed the Co Down Height’s Bar with bullets and left another five victims injured.

The shooting occurred as customers watched the Republic of Ireland play Italy in the World Cup.

The attack on June 18, 1994, was carried out by gunmen armed with an AK47 and a Czech-made rifle.

The suspect was taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

The victims were Adrian Rogan, aged 34, 39-year-old Eamon Byrne, Patsy O’Hare, aged 35, Dan McCreanor, aged 59, Barney Green, aged 87, one of the oldest murdered during the troubles, and Malcolm Jenkinson, aged 54.

Their families had criticised the original police investigation for lack of progress. An alleged security force agent has been linked to the gang behind the killing.
