Former Co Cork steel plant to be assessed following waste controversy

An independent investigation is to be carried out into the waste controversy surrounding the site of a former steel plant in Co Cork.

Environment Minister John Gormley has announced that the area will be assessed next week by White Young Green consultants, who previously investigated the site in 2005.

The investigation comes in response to claims during the week that people living in the area in Ringaskiddy could have been exposed to 500,000 tonnes of toxic waste - including the carcinogenic chromium-six.

There were calls from the opposition today for Mr Gormley to 'come clean' about any possible health risks for the public.
