Man charged with INLA membership

A man from the North, arrested as part of a Garda Special Branch investigation into INLA activity in Dublin, was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court tonight with membership of the terrorist organisation.

A man from the North, arrested as part of a Garda Special Branch investigation into INLA activity in Dublin, was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court tonight with membership of the terrorist organisation.

Declan Duffy (aged 34), a native of Armagh City, with an address at Hanover St West, Dublin 8 was charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish National Liberation Army, otherwise the INLA on June 22.

Detective Sergeant Marilyn Brosnan, of the Special Detective Unit, Harcourt Square, gave evidence of arresting Duffy this evening at 6.51pm at Blackrock for the purpose of charging him before the Special Criminal Court.

She said that when he was cautioned, Duffy replied: "I am not a member of any illegal organisation."

She gave evidence that Duffy was conveyed to Blackrock garda station and from there to the Special Criminal Court.

Duffy replied: "Yes , I am" when asked by the court registrar if he was Declan Duffy. There was tight security at the Green St courthouse for the 15-minute hearing with armed detectives and soldiers on duty.

The court remanded Duffy in custody until Thursday.
