Armed robbers target Dublin supermarket

Two masked men armed with guns held up a supermarket tonight in the bustling Rathmines district of south Dublin.

The Dunnes Stores outlet was shut at the time but there were still five staff members inside the shopping centre.

The two gunmen, both wearing balaclavas and brandishing what is believed to have been a shotgun and a handgun, forced three workers into a cash room and threatened them.

Detectives described as substantial an amount of money that was taken from the cash room by the raiders.

The three staff were locked up in the room as the robbers made their getaway in a silver coloured Ford Galaxy that was parked on nearby Castlewood Avenue.

No shots were fired and no-one was injured during the hold-up at around 8.30pm, according to investigating officers.

Detectives at Rathmines have appealed for anybody who was in the busy area and who might have information to help their inquiry to get in contact.
