Retailers will have to pass on Euro benefits to consumers: Tanáiste

The Tanáiste and Enterprise Minister has said that pressure will be maintained to ensure more shops pass on the benefits of the strong Euro to their customers.

Mary Coughlan held talks on the issue with the National Consumer Agency and with Retail Ireland, which represents a large number of department stores, supermarkets and other shops.

This follows complaints that some retailers were charging far more in Euros for products when compared to their Sterling price equivalent.

The Tánaiste says her Department will be monitoring how well the shops deliver better prices.

“Retailers are going to look at how the price differential can be followed through and how it can be afforded to the consumer, and we will evaluate how that has progressed over the next number of weeks,” Minister Coughlan said.
