Bank Holiday road deaths

Seven people have been killed in a series of accidents on the country’s roads this Bank Holiday weekend.

In one of the most devastating incidents, two young men riding motorbikes were killed today in a crash in a rural part of Co Kerry.

The accident happened at around 4.45pm on the R557 road between Finuge and Lixnaw.

Gardai said the dead men were believed to be in their 20s.

The accident brings the road death toll to 118 this year.

An elderly woman died following a collision on the R336 road at Rusheen, Bearna, Galway at 3.45pm.

The woman, who was in her 70s, was the front-seat passenger of a car which collided with a camper van. She was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

Two men who were driving the vehicles were treated in hospital.

A 43-year-old man was knocked down and killed just after midnight.

The man was struck by a car on the N8 Dublin to Cork Road, two miles north of Durrow, Co Laois at 12.20am.

Gardai said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, yesterday a man was killed after the car he was driving collided with a tractor and bailing machine near the Cork-Waterford border.

The accident occurred shortly before 6.30pm on the N25 at Grange, Ardmore, Co Waterford.

A 63-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving crashed at Tooma, Cloone, Co Leitrim.

The accident occurred at around 4.30pm in the afternoon.

And on Friday night a man in his 30s died in a road accident at Dromasta, Drimoleague, Co Cork.

He was driving in the car alone when he collided with another car.
