An Antrim man was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court today with possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Barry Petticrew (aged 37), Ashdale, Station Rd, Randalstown, Co. Antrim, was charged with the unlawful possession of a Browning 9mm handgun and ten rounds of 9mm parabellum calibre ammunition at Dundalk Western bypass, Ballynahattin, Dundalk, Co Louth on Saturday last.

Detective Sergeant Kieran Reidy told the court that arrested Mr Petticrew today outside Dundalk garda station so that he could be brought before the Special Criminal Court and charged with both offences.

Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne, presiding at the three-judge court, remanded Mr Petticrew in custody until next week.
