Jury in murder trial hears forensic evidence

A jury hearing the trial of a Dublin man accused of murder has begun hearing evidence from a forensic road accident investigator attached to the traffic unit of Garda National Headquarters.

Anthony O’Reilly, 22, with an address at Cleggan Park, Ballyfermot, Dublin, is charged with the murder of Daniel McDonald, 21, on Main Street, Arklow on February 2, 2007.

O’Reilly has pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr McDonald, dangerous driving causing the death of Mr McDonald and intentionally or recklessly grabbing the steering wheel of Jenny Tobin’s car causing it to swerve in the direction of Mr McDonald.

Garda Edward Davin has been called to give additional evidence in the case.

The jury of six men and six women also heard from Superintendent Katherine Keogh who oversaw the investigation in Mr McDonald’s death.

She told the court O’Reilly was arrested for dangerous driving on the morning of the accident and later arrested with dangerous driving causing death.

His second arrest for dangerous driving causing death was in her view unlawful she told the court and O’Reilly as told he was free to go but he voluntarily went to Arklow Garda Station to make a statement.

The trial continues.
