Up to 800 people were evacuated from a Dublin city centre nightclub in the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out on the premises.

The blaze happened just inside the door of The Village nightclub on Wexford Street on the south side of the city at about 1.30am this morning.

A number of surrounding buildings were also evacuated.

Five units of Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and the Gardaí sealed off the area.

There were no injuries and the street has now re-opened to traffic.

Gardaí say the fire was not malicious and believe an electrical fault was to blame.
