Minister to announce garda whistle-blower service
Justice Minister Brian Lenihan is reportedly set to announce the establishment of a new whistle-blower system today to root out corruption within the Gardaí.
The system is based on a proposal from the Morris Tribunal, which has been investigating garda corruption in Donegal.
Reports this morning say Brian McCarthy, a former secretary general to President Mary McAleese, will be appointed to receive confidential reports from gardaí who want to report corruption and wrongdoing in the force.
The confidential and independent office is designed to ensure gardaí that their career prospects will not be harmed and they will not be intimidated if they raise concerns about the actions of their colleagues.
