Girl freed after Polish murders quiz
A teenage girl questioned about the double murder of two young Polish workers has been released without charge, gardaí said today.
Investigating officers said they will not be preparing any file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in relation to the 14-year-old’s arrest.
She was quizzed throughout yesterday, in the presence of her parents, about the brutal killings of Pawel Kalite, 26, and Marius Szwajkos, 27, in Drimnagh, south Dublin.
They died last week after being stabbed in the head and throat with a screwdriver, apparently after refusing to buy alcohol for a gang of under-age youths.
The 14-year-old girl was arrested at her home in Crumlin, another southside suburb close to Drimnagh, early yesterday morning and taken to Sundrive Road Garda Station.
She was detained until around midnight under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Three other teenagers – aged 15, 16 and 19 – have already been arrested by detectives investigating the stabbings near the Polish men’s home in Benbulben Road last Saturday week.
They were all released without charge while a file is prepared for the DPP, who will decide if criminal proceedings should be brought against them.
President Mary McAleese was among more than 1,000 people who attended a special service in memory of the victims at the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Drimnagh last night.
