Ahern’s lawyers attack Mahon Tribunal’s 'intrusions'
The Mahon Tribunal has been attacked by the Taoiseach's legal team who claim that every day seems to yield another intrusive inquiry.
The comments come as Bertie Ahern is in the witness box for two days of evidence.
This afternoon he faced questioning about an account into which Fianna Fáil lodged money given to Mr Ahern by Davy Stockbrokers for the 1992 Election.
However, lawyers for the Taoiseach raised a number of concerns this afternoon about aspects of the Tribunal's questioning this morning.
Senior Counsel Conor Mcguire said there has been no mention today of Quarryvale or Tom Gilmartin.
He told the Tribunal that every day seems to yield another intrusive inquiry which brings investigations further and further away from the initial allegation from Mr Gilmartin.
Bertie Ahern is now being questioned about an account with the initials BT, which was opened by Tim Collins and Mr Ahern says was for the Dublin Central Constituency branch of Fianna Fáil and the upkeep of St Lukes.
The tribunal claims there's no evidence that this was a Fianna Fáil party account and not a personal account.
