Five migrant groups criticise new Immigration Bill

The Government's contentious new immigration legislation is coming in for further criticism today.

Five groups supporting migrants and asylum seekers have expressed their opposition to the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill published last week by Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan.

The proposed legislation would make it easier for the Government to detain and deport illegal immigrants.

Mr Lenihan claims it is needed to strengthen public confidence in the immigration system.

However, the Immigrant Council of Ireland says a restriction on the right to marry is one area where the bill is "unnecessary and draconian".
