Teenager banned from ATMs

A teenager has been banned from being anywhere near an ATM following his arrest for theft this morning.

Judge Ann Ryan heard at the Children’s Court that in the early hours of the morning the boy (aged 16) had been arrested for theft of €250 from a man who had been making a cash withdrawal at an ATM on Dublin’s Hawkins Street.

Garda Diarmuid Fox of Store Street station said it was alleged that "the accused approached the injured party and produced a magazine. He distracted the man when he was making the withdrawal by putting the magazine up to his face."

“He then pushed buttons on the ATM and withdrew €250,” he said.

Judge Ryan remanded the Romanian teenager, who was accompanied to court by his mother, on bail until a date next month to allow him time to consider his plea.

She acceded to the Garda’s request to impose a bail condition banning the boy from being in the Dublin 1 and Dublin 2 areas for the duration of the case.

"I am going to add another one," she said, "to stay away from all ATMs nationwide."
