The Revenue Commission is getting new powers to examine the investments of Irish people in overseas property.

Tax officials are said to have growing concerns that a number of people are using properties abroad to evade tax.

Revenue commissioners have received extra powers from the Government to ensure Irish residents are paying tax on any money they receive from investments made in overseas properties.

As part of the new powers, the commissioners will be able to get information from letting agents here on their clients overseas dealings.
