Plans to be unveiled for new Dublin town

Plans for the heart of Ireland’s first new town to be built this century are to be unveiled today.

Developers have vowed that the centre of Adamstown in west Dublin will set new benchmarks for urban planning in Europe.

The suburb is expected to grow to the size of towns like Sligo, Tralee and Dundalk with a forecasted population of more than 30,000.

Planning applications for Adamstown Central, near Lucan, are also to be lodged with South Dublin County Council.

Civic, residential, community and commercial facilities will compare favourably with city districts in Ireland and Europe, the developers claim.

The plans for the centre – next to the recently opened Adamstown railway station and schools – will be unveiled at a hotel in central Dublin.

A display will include a detailed large scale model of the town centre showcasing the design by a team of seven architectural practices and other consultants.

A spokesman for one of the developers said: “The architectural practices were chosen through a competitive process and are led by London firm Metropolitan Workshop who were themselves appointed from an international shortlist of five practices.”
