Fine Gael is reportedly giving "active consideration" to lodging a complaint against the Taoiseach with the Oireachtas ethics watchdog.

Reports this morning say a spokesman has confirmed that the party is considering a complaint to the Standards in Public Office Commission over Bertie Ahern's handling of his tax affairs.

Under ethics legislation, all TDs must declare themselves tax compliant in order to secure a tax clearance certificate that must be lodged with the standards body.

Questions have been raised about whether the certificate granted to Mr Ahern after the 2002 election was properly obtained in light of the money he received from friends and businessmen in the 1990s.
