The Government is reportedly planning to make immigrants sit English language tests if they want to become Irish citizens.

Reports this morning say legislation due to be published in the new year will set minimum standards of English as a requirement of citizenship.

At present, immigrants can apply for citizenship without any language requirement if they have been living in Ireland for five years.
