Ahern to attend European Council summit

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will join other EU leaders at the European Council summit in Brussels today.

Foreign Affairs Ministers from the 27 member states will also hold a working lunch to discuss issues of common interest.

The Council session will be chaired by Portuguese prime minister, Jose Socrates.

EU heads of state formally signed the controversial EU Reform Treaty in Lisbon yesterday.

The Oireachtas European Affairs Committee announced it is to hold public information meetings around the country on the Treaty before a referendum takes place.
