The consumers' association of Ireland has urged charities to be clear for what purpose donations that are being made are used for.

They say gift schemes where the public can donate to buy a goat or a water pump can be confusing when the value of the donation doesn't match the actual cost of the item.

There is hope that a new Charities Bill to be passed this year will encourage charities to state if a donation is for the charity generally or for a specific purpose.
