The Irish Refugee Council is calling on the Government to increase direct-provision payments to asylum seekers.

The council says raising the weekly payments from the current €19 to €60 per adult would lift the country's 6,000 asylum seekers out of poverty.

The payment is made to people awaiting asylum applications at reception centres, but has never been increased since its introduction eight years ago.
