The new Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy, is beginning his first day in the job today.

The new Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy, is beginning his first day in the job today.

Mr Murphy succeeds Noel Conroy, who retired yesterday after 40 years of service in An Garda Siochana.

Mr Murphy, a native of Co Cork, joined the Gardaí in 1967.

He was promoted to the rank of chief superintendent in 1996 and was a key player in the establishment and running of the Criminal Assets Bureau set up after the murder of Veronica Guerin the same year.
