Armed robbers made off with a substantial sum of money yesterday evening after threatening staff at a post office.

Armed robbers made off with a substantial sum of money yesterday evening after threatening staff at a post office.

The raid occurred in the harbour town of Warrenpoint, Co Down at around 5.30pm.

Two men, one armed with a handgun, entered the post office in Church Street through a side door when it was opened to admit a member of staff.

Once inside they threatened five members of staff before making off with the money.

The robbers used a dark coloured car which headed towards the village of Rostrevor and was later found burnt out on the Moygallon Road in Warrenpoint.

The first robber was 6ft and was wearing a navy blue Royal Mail fleece, dark trousers, green gardening type gloves and was carrying a blue sports bag.

His accomplice was 5ft 6in, medium to stocky, and wearing a black hooded bomber jacket with the hood up, dark trousers and dark knitted gloves.

Both wore balaclavas.

Police had appealed for witnesses to come forward to help their investigation.
