Cancer Society wants transport provisions for patients

The Irish Cancer Society is urging the Health Service Executive to put transport provisions in place for women from the midlands who will need to travel to Dublin for breast cancer services.

It follows an announcement by the HSE that the mammography centre at the Midlands Hospital in Mullingar will shut down next year.

The move is part of the gradual scaling back of smaller cancer care centres, to be replaced by eight designated treatment centres countrywide.

John McCormack of the Irish Cancer Society says alternative arrangements need to be set up for up to a thousand women in the midlands who will be affected.
