The President has been conferred with an honorary degree at New Zealand's oldest university.

Mary McAleese was presented with a Doctor of Laws degree at the University of Otago in Dunedin today.

She is the first Irish person to receive such an honour from the university, which is the only one in Australia or New Zealand with an undergraduate programme in Irish Studies.
