Commissioner to brief Govt on gangland activity

Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy is due to brief the Government about gangland activity this evening.

Mr Conroy will be accompanied by his impending successor, Fachtna Murphy, when he presents a dossier on the issue to the Taoiseach.

The Government is understood to be considering a range of new proposals to crack down on organised criminals.

One of these includes putting the witness protection programme on a statutory footing.
