Romanian teenager jailed for throwing bottles during riot

A Romanian teenager who threw up to thirty bottles at riot police during last year's 'Love Ulster' parade has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.

19-year-old Andrei Diaconu of Seville Place, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty to violent disorder at O'Connell Street, in the capital on February 25, 2006.

Diaconu - who was identified on CCTV - told the court he knew nothing about Irish history and went to the parade for the "fun of it".

The judge accepted that his involvement was at the lower end of the scale and suspended the last nine months of the sentence because he had co-operated with Gardaí.
