Funeral of second Bray firefighter takes place today

The funeral of the second Irish firefighter killed battling a blaze in an old factory will take place today.

Brian Murray, 46, died alongside fire service colleague Mark O’Shaugnessy, 26, as they fought the fire in the coastal town of Bray, Co Wicklow – about 20km (12 miles) south of Dublin.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of Mr O’Shaugnessy in Bray yesterday.

The town came to a standstill again last night when Mr Murray’s remains were removed to the Holy Redeemer Church in advance of today’s service.

A father of 15, he joined the brigade in early 1998 and worked as a sub-officer - the second in command in the town’s fire service in charge of 13 other firefighters.

The blaze broke out in the warehouse in the Little Bray area of the town just after 10am last Wednesday.

Three fire crews from Bray and neighbouring town Greystones attended.

Within an hour the roof had collapsed and it took crews until 2pm to bring the blaze under control, but they remained on stand-by throughout the day amid fears that smouldering rubble could reignite.

Several nearby homes were also evacuated.

The funeral takes place at 11.30am.
