The Philanthropist of the Year scheme is being set up to recognise increasing contributions to charities and not-for-profit organisations.

The Community Foundation, which helps fund voluntary groups, has established the awards to promote donations.

Its inaugural ceremony takes place in Dublin on November 15 – International Philanthropy Day.

“Philanthropy is making an increasing contribution to Ireland’s €2.5bn charity and not-for-profit sector,” said a Community Foundation spokesman.

“These awards will celebrate those individuals who take a planned approach to their giving to help create a better Ireland.”

Tina Roche, chief executive of CFI, will launch the awards at Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green with the help of the Rialto Twirlers, a lively majorette group that has benefited from private donations from philanthropists.
