Gardaí step up calls for introduction of pepper spray
Rank-and-file Garda are stepping up calls for the introduction of pepper spray as an alternative to the traditional baton.
The Garda Representative Association says injuries to Gardaí on the beat would drop by as much as 75% if they were equipped with the spray.
Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy has repeatedly rejected recommendations for pepper spray, claiming the number of attacks on Gardai doesn't warrant the measure.
However, the GRA says pepper spray is much more effective than a baton in dealing with violent situations.
