Man arrested after 'assault' in Galway

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an aggravated sexual assault in Galway during the week.

A woman was assaulted by a man carrying a knife on the Walter Macken Road, near Mervue, between 1am and 4am on Thursday morning.

The man is being detained at Galway garda station and Gardaí are also appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.

They are especially anxious to talk to a man who cycled through St James Pitches at the time, and to another man who met the victim in a distressed state after the incident.
