A 23-year-old man has died after apparently being assaulted with a slash-hook in Sligo town in the early hours of this morning.

The incident, which is believed to be related to a feud between Traveller families, happened just after 1am on Joe McDonnell Drive in the Cranmore area.

The victim was rushed to Sligo General Hospital, where he died just after 6am.

The scene of the attack has been sealed off for technical examination and the State Pathologist's Office has been notified.

Gardai are interviewing people who were in the vicinity at the time and are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen a dark-coloured Ford Focus leaving the scene.
