The Revenue Commissioners reportedly paid back more than €440m to workers who paid too much tax last year.

Reports this morning say the refunds were made to almost 668,000 PAYE workers who put in claims following a publicity campaign by the Revenue.

The refunds were owed to workers under a range of tax reliefs for rent payments, trade union subscriptions and bin charges.

The huge payout is prompting fresh calls for a new system to make it easier for workers to reclaim money.
