Doherty wins first-ever Seanad seat for Sinn Féin
Sinn Féin has made history by winning a seat in the Seanad for the first time.
Donegal man Pearse Doherty, who failed to win a Dáil seat at the general election, secured a seat on the agriculture panel with the highest number of first-preference votes.
Mr Doherty secured 103 votes and was elected on the first count.
Labour's Alan Kelly, meanwhile, came home second after he also exceeded the quota.
So far, seven of the 60 Seanad seats have been filled, with Fianna Fáil winning three, Labour two, Fine Gael one and Sinn Féin one.
