A review commissioned by the Health Service Executive is reportedly set to recommend the closure of accident and emergency departments at three hospitals in the mid-west.

The review is being conducted by a team of British consultants and its recommendations are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Reports this morning say it will propose closing down A&E units at Ennis, Nenagh and St John's Hospital in Limerick.

The facilities will then be replaced with nurse-led minor-injuries units.

The news comes just months after a leaked document revealed plans to also close A&E units in Monaghan, Dundalk and Navan over the coming years.
