The HSE has said it will conduct an investigation without delay into the extent of knowledge of allegations regarding a former department head at Athlone IT.

Doctor Niall McElwee, who was the head of the Centre for Child and Youth Care, resigned last week after telling the college he'd been convicted of a sex offence in the Netherlands in 2005.

It emerged yesterday that the Gardaí had informed the Midland Health Board over three years ago of allegations of a sexual assault against him.
