Satellite leads gardaí to alleged GPS thief

Satelite technology helped catch a teenager when a GPS unit he allegedly stole from a car was tracked down, a court has heard.

The Dublin Children’s Court was told that the stolen GPS (Global Positioning System) unit led gardaí to the boy’s whereabouts.

Garda Caitriona Cusack of the Bridewell Station said it was alleged that “the accused broke into two cars. He stole a GPS system from the car and he was then seen breaking into another car.”

“He had the GPS in his possession so the owner of the car was able to track him into a certain area where he was arrested,” she added.

The 16-year-old boy was charged today with criminal damage and attempted unlawful interference of two motor vehicles, at Western Way, Dublin 7, on June 24 last. He made no rely when he was charged.

Judge Aeneus McCarthy granted legal aid to the north inner city Dublin boy who was accompanied to court by his mother. He remanded the teenager on bail to appear again on July 31 next to allow him time to take legal advice and to consider his plea.
