Gardaí in County Clare have begun an investigation into how two young children managed to breach security at Shannon Airport last night and wander close to a busy taxiway.

The two, aged 11 and 5 and from Shannon Town, were discovered by an airport police patrol near a hangar from which the Irish Coastguard operates a rescue helicopter.

A spokesperson for Shannon Airport confirmed the incident took place, but said there was no danger to the children from aircraft at the time, as there were no planes moving in that part of the airfield.

The children, who apparently went to the airport to see a rescue helicopter, were handed over to Gardam before being taken home.
