One of the men jailed over the killing of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe is to be released from prison today.

Michael O'Neill is the first of four men to walk free from jail after serving eight years of his 11-year sentence.

Detective Garda McCabe was shot dead during a post office raid in Adare in Co. Limerick on June 7, 1996.

Four men - Michael O'Neill, Jeremiah Sheehy, Pearse McAuley and Kevin Walsh all pleaded guilty to his manslaughter.

Today Michael O'Neill will be released from Castlerea prison, the others are expected to be freed within two years.

O'Neill was given a standard remission of 25% of his sentence for good behaviour.

Sinn Féin may make a statement on the release later today.
