The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has offered to appoint an independent expert to evaluate the nurses' demands for a 35-hour working week.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, Mr Ahern said this person would be asked to examine every possible option to facilitate the reduction in working hours within the framework of social partnership.
